Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology

Medical Microbiology has a broad scientific fields which includes Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parazitology and Immunology. In Medical Microbiology Deparment, the routine laboratory service of our hospital is given by identifying the causative microorganisms of the infectious diseases. The identification of microorganisms related to human diseases, the enlightenment of virulance mechanisms against infectious disesases, the investigation of the antimicrobial susceptibilities and antimicrobial resistance and the specification of human protection mechanisms against microbial agents are the main research areas.

Kocaeli University Medical Faculty, Department of Medical Microbiology was established by Prof. Dr. Recep Bingöl in 1995. The Head of Department was Prof. Dr. Volkan Dündar between 1999 and 2007. Then, Prof. Dr. Recep Bingöl was worked as head between 2007 and 2011. Since 2011, Prof. Dr. Aynur Karadenizli has been working as the head of Department. Totally eight academic personal have been working in the Department and the distribution is as follows: one Professor, six Associated Professor and one Assistant Professor.

The academic personal in Medical Microbiology Department have been giving Medical Microbiology lectures and practical laboratory applications to Medical students at first, second and third class from the beginning of education in Kocaeli University Medical Faculty in 1997. Microbiology Department also gives Microbiology training and a certificate to research assistants to become a specialist in Microbiology at the end of four years training period. In addition, MSc and PhD education programs are applied in association with Institute of Medical Sciences.

In Bacteriology laboratory of our Department, the researches about the identification of medically important microorganisms and the determination and typing of antimicrobial resistance genes are carried out. In Virology laboratory, the cell cultures of some viruses are done and identified using molecular methods. In addition , routine laboratory service of our teaching hospital as well as scientific researches are done in the fields of Bacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology.
