Chest Diseases
Department of Chest Diseases is one of the academic units of Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine, a State University Hospital. In 1995, education and patient care started in wards and classrooms opened in a common building of Social Insurance O rganisation in Derince-Sopalı, and after the damage to these buildings after the 17 August 1999 Marmara earthquake, pre- and post-graduate education and training activities and patient care were continued in prefabricated buildings without interruption. In 2005, our department moved to the hospital building in the new University campus in the Umuttepe campus. Since this date, all education, training, outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment procedures have been carried out in this hospitals and training blocks.
Prof. Dr. Haşim Boyacı is the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ilgazli, Prof. Dr. İlknur Başyiğit and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serap Argun Barış are other faculty members. To date, 32 doctors completed their Chest Disease Expertise program and became a Chest Disease Expert and the training of 8 research assistants is continuing. Seminars and literature programs are held regularly two days a week for assistant training. Thorax Malignancy Council is held every Friday morning, Interstitial Lung Diseases Council every 15 days, Pulmonary Hypertension Council is held once in a month.
Chest Diseases Clinic mainly covers diseases such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, tuberculosis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung diseases, sarcoidosis, pulmonary hypertension, sleep-related breathing disorders, smoking addiction and pleural diseases.
There is a 20 bed capacity in the clinic and 4 beds in the Respiratory Sleep Unit. Chest Diseases Clinic has high occupancy rates, especially in winter months. Although there is no Intensive Care Unit belonging to the department, there are 6 non-invasive mechanical ventilation devices and treatment is carried out with the diagnosis of respiratory failure. There is an Intervention Unit in the Chest Disease Clinic where arterial blood gas test, PPD test, thoracentesis, pleural biopsy and anti-IgE applications are performed.
Outpatient clinic patient care is provided by the research assistants and supported by the responsible faculty member of that week. Patient consultations from the emergency department and other clinics are evaluated in the fastest way and meticulously, and are finalized in consultation with the responsible faculty member. There is also outpatient clinic service provided by faculty members on certain days of the week, it is possible to apply by appointment.
Pulmonary Function Tests:
Spirometry, body pletismography and carbon monoxide diffusion test are performed daily without the need for an appointment; Bronchial provocation test and allergy skin test are performed as soon as possible by appointment. The result is given at the end of the test. In the pandemic area pulmonary function tests were ceased, it has been started currently to be applied by appointment.
Respiratory Sleep Unit:
It is one of the most comprehensive sleep units in the region and provides service to patients with sleep apnea with its 4 bed capacity. Respiratory changes during sleep are evaluated (polysomnography) and if necessary treatment with pressured air through nasal airway with a mask is applied to the patients.
Bronchoscopy Unit:
Bronchoscopy unit consists of waiting area, bronchoscopy, local anesthesia and recovery room. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is performed 4 days a week. In addition, patients who are hospitalized in the general and coronary intensive care units and who need fiberoptic bronchoscopy are operated at the bedside with a portable bronchoscope. EBUS is not yet available in our clinic however we are trying to obtain the system as soon as possible.
