Anesthesiology and Reanimation
Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department of Kocaeli Univeristy, Faculty of Medicine was founded at 1995 and first department chair appointed was Prof.Dr.Kamil Toker. The Division of Intensive Care was founded in 2013 under the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department. Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department of Kocaeli Faculty of Medicine where 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 3 asistant professors are currently working, is one of the leading centers in Anesthesiology and Reanimation area in Turkey.
Our Department is one of the 16 training centers approved by the European Association of Regional Anesthesia (ESRA) across Europe. In our clinic, visiting physicians from Turkey and abroad receive training in the field of regional anesthesia. All regional anesthesia techniques are performed under ultrasound guidence successfully in both pediatric and adult patients. In accordance with the surgery to be performed, peripheral nerve blocks, central blocks and fascial plane blocks are frequently performed to provide surgical anesthesia and/or provide postoperative analgesia.
Approximately 12.000 operations performed in 17 operating rooms of Kocaeli University Hospital in 2021. 9755 of these performed under general anesthesia, and 1503 was performed under regional anesthesia.
Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department of Kocaeli Faculty of Medicine started the airway management courses in Turkey in 2006. Today, intubation with a videoryngoscope and fiberoptic intubation are frequently applied, and supraglottic airway devices are frequently used during general anesthesia applications in the clinic.
Double lumen tubes and bronchial blockers are often used for lung ventilation during thoracic anesthesia application. Our Department is one of the most experienced centers in the use of bronchial blockers in Turkey. In the Cardiovascular anesthesia Department, pediatric and adult congenital heart defects, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement surgery are performed.
In Kocaeli Medical Faculty Hospital, where all intracranial and spinal interventions are performed, general anesthesia is most commonly used due to endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery due to Kocaeli University Hospital has an pituitary research center. General anesthesia has been used for 6000 pituitary tumor operations since 2002.
Epidural or combined spinal epidural analgesia method are widely used for pain relief in labour. Regional anesthesia is the preferred method in cesarean section. Especially in morbidly obese pregnants, regional anesthesia/analgesia is performed under ultrasound guidence to reduce the complication rate.
Department of Critical Care Medicine:
Advanced hemodynamic monitoring, noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, ECMO and renal replacement therapies are applied in the Intensive Care Units. Percutaneous tracheostomy, chest tube insertion, and bronchoscopy are among the applied procedures.
Department of Algology:
In our algology department, cancer pain, headaches, facial pain-neuralgia, neck pain, shoulder-arm pain, back pain, waist-leg pain, pain due to vascular occlusion are treated. Annually, approximately 3000 patients apply to our pain outpatient clinic and approximately 400 invasive procedures are performed.
Our faculty members take an active role as speakers in national and international congresses and seminars.
