Physiology
Department of Physiology; carries out basic and clinical research activities aiming to explain some patho-physiological mechanisms in order to increase the quality of human life in the range varying from molecule to human being. As of 2022, our Department carries out its academic and educational activities with 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 1 Research Assistant. Next to; PhD, master and medical specialization training has been succesfully continuing in Physiology.
History:
Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology started its activities in 1995. Our department, which has been structured with a focus on neurophysiology since the first years, has been studying especially on; experimental epilepsy models, blood-brain barrier, electrophysiology, learning and memory, proteomics, epilepsy and cytokines, possible mechanisms affecting the epileptogenesis process and behavioral changes. Our scientific studies are carried out as advanced research projects with both national and international collaborations and the results are shared with the scientific world.
Our Department contributed to the establishment of the important units of our faculty (Hematology Lab, Experimental Medicine Research and Application Center). In addition, our department actively participates in theoretical and practical student education within the scope of Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Science, Faculty of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Sport Sciences and Health Sciences Institute.
Mission-Vision:
To provide theoretical and applied course training in general physiology, hematology, neurophysiology and general study and research rules in the first years of specialization and doctorate education. To provide the necessary infrastructure for the thesis or research project, we carry out neurphysiological, molecular and behavioral study in colloboratin with known national and international University such as; Radboud University in the NL, Acıbadem and Marmara Universty. Research results then share with scintific world and published as an international publication.

Research Facilities (Laboratory, Classroom, etc.):
In the research laboratory of our department, there are Stereotaxy apparatus, modular recording system to measure and analyse EEG-ECG-Blood pressure (direct and indirect) used in experimental studies. Additionally, we use laboratory materials such as Water Bath (Bain-marie); Magnetic Stirrer with Heating; Spectrophotometer, Centrifuge Device; Small Animal Decapitator; Precision Libra; Infusion Pump; Dry Air Sterilizer&Oven; Animal Activity Meter; Metabolic Cages) and organ bath in experimental and clinical studies. Next to these, there are many behavioral experimental sets such as Moris water tank, passive avoidance, sucrose test, T maze test and mandatory swimming tests within the facilities of Experimental Medicine Research and Application Center.
In addition, it provides a multi-disciplinary environment and offers the opportunity to work on proteomics within the scope of the Proteomics Laboratory, .real time PCR and cell culture in the Stem Cell Laboratory of our university.
Education and Training:
In the Department, undergraduate and post-graduate education programs are implemented for the Faculty of Medicine.
We give all aspects of Physiology within several courses at Undergraduate level in 1st and 2 th term in Medical School.
In addition, courses are given at the Institute and various High Schools affiliated to our university.
