Emergency Medicine
Emergency medicine is a specialty serving patients with unexpected health problems or injuries. Emergency medicine is practiced by emergency physicians who are trained to diagnose, stabilize, treat, and care for patients with acute illnesses or injuries.
Kocaeli University, Faculty of Medicine, Emergency Medicine Program was established in 2003. The program aims to provide the highest quality training, research, and patient care with five faculty members (3 professors, 1 associate professor, and 1 assistant professor) and 27 emergency medicine residents at the Kocaeli University Hospital, Department of Emergency Medicine. Efforts are being made to provide evidence-based, interdisciplinary, and accessible care for the patients’ needs.
The primary principle of our program is to achieve excellence in patient care, to train the residents to be skilled academics and clinicians with engaging research and education. During our four-year program, the residents participate in daily grand rounds, weekly seminars, and journal clubs, monthly debriefing meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, and simulation trainings.
For medical students, daily case discussions, bedside teaching, or simulation training are carried out by senior residents or faculty members. Additionally, the students can perform clinical evaluation, physical exams under supervision. The students record the clinical evaluation of their patients in structured forms. The competency of medical students is evaluated according to their performance in case presentations, documentation, and clinical practices. The curriculum of our emergency medicine program is compatible with national and European core education program.
