Histology and Embryology
History:
Kocaeli University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology was established in 1994 under the chairmanship of Prof.Dr. Süreyya Ceylan, who was first appointed, together with Prof. Dr. Melda Yardımoğlu and Prof. Dr. Hakkı Dalçık. In this period, two post-graduate education programs were started with two TUS (examination for specialty in medicine) assistants and one assistant registered postgraduate program of the Institute of Health Sciences.
Department of Histology and Embryology at Kocaeli University School of Medicine was established in 1995 and education program for undergraduate medical education was started with 41 students in Derince. Since 2005, education, teaching and research activities have been going on the Faculty of Medicine in Kocaeli University Umuttepe Campus. Since 2005, education, teaching and research activities have been going on the Faculty of Medicine in Kocaeli University Umuttepe Campus.
He has been the Director of Kocaeli University Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Application Center, which started operating in 2007, and the Head of the Stem Cell Department of the Institute of Health Sciences since 2015. Dr. It is conducted by Prof. Dr. Yusufhan Yazır.
Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Assisted Reproductive Techniques Center was founded in 2008 and still continuing its activities and Prof.Dr. Serdar Filiz, one of the lecturer in Histology and Embryology Department, is the director of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory in this center. In addition, all of our faculty members have received Assisted Reproductive Techniques Laboratory certificate training.
In 2009-2010, our department took part in student education at Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Faculty of Medicine within the scope of cooperation with Western Black Sea Universities. Within the scope of the Cooperation of West Black Sea Universities, a joint doctoral program and a joint master's program have been carried out since 2012 and 2014, respectively with the Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University, Institue of Health Sciences, Department of Histology and Embryology.
In our department; In addition to routine light microscopy and immunohistochemistry laboratories, the infrastructure and facilities of Experimental Medicine Research Unit, Education Block multidisciplinary student laboratories, Experimental and Clinical Research Unit and Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Application Center are used to carry out current education and research. In our department, 2 TUS, 11 Master's and 12 Doctoral trainings have been completed within the scope of post-graduation education programs.
Our Department Today:
After the retirement of Prof. Dr. Hakkı Dalçık and Prof. Süreyya Ceylan, our department continues academic activities with the staff of 4 Professors, 2 Doctorants and 2 Research Assistants.
In our department, pre-graduation and post-graduation education and training programs are implemented for the Faculty of Medicine. Within the scope of pre-graduation education and training program; Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Term I, II and III students, Faculty of Dentistry II. and III. Histology and Embryology training is given to first grade students and students of the Faculty of Health Sciences by our Department. Within the scope of the post-graduate education and training program, Histology and Embryology training is provided by our Department to students in the postgraduate (master's and doctoral) education program affiliated with the Institute of Health Sciences.
Histology; It is a branch of science that examines, teaches and researches the invisible fine structures of normal cells, tissues and organs at the microscopic level. For this reason, it has an important place in the field of medicine and health sciences, both in terms of education and training and research. The fact that all physiological and pathological events in the body occur at the cell and tissue level shows the importance of histology education and training. Histological preparation techniques, appropriate stains and microscopes are used to examine normal body structures. The structural and functional findings obtained are transferred to students theoretically and practically using various educational and training tools.
Embryology is a branch of science that researches, studies and teaches the formation and development of living things in the prenatal period. All developmental events from fertilization to birth are within the scope of embryology. In humans, how different tissues and organs develop from the zygote formed after the spermatozoon fertilizes the secondary oocyte and creates a complex multicellular organism; The basic characteristics of humans that begin to function with the development of tissues and organs; underlying causes of abnormal development; pathological phenomena such as tissue regeneration, proliferation, growth and the formation of some tumors; It clarifies immunological events and the origins of autoimmune diseases associated with embryonic life. For this reason, the information learned from the science of embryology; It provides a better understanding of many course subjects such as Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Genetics, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, scientific developments in the field of "Assisted Reproductive Techniques" in order to solve fertility-related health problems also include embryology issues. Significant and rapid developments have been made in this field, especially in the field of embryology in recent years. For all these reasons, it is extremely important to convey to students in detail the developments in prenatal life and embryology science.
Our Department has many scientific research projects that have been completed or ongoing within its own body and in partnership with other departments, and the completed scientific studies have been presented at national and international congresses and published in various journals.
Our mission is to:
- To provide scientific training in the field of Histology and Embryology within the scope of pre-graduation and post-graduation education and training,
- Contributing to universal science through research activities and carrying out public service for its development,
- To train physicians and scientists who can apply their knowledge and skills in their field, are sensitive to public health, adhere to ethical values and have scientific competence,
- To provide scientific, contemporary and quality healthcare services as an embryologist to patients treated in the in vitro fertilization unit.
Our vission is to:
- To become nationally and internationally recognized in the field of education, training and scientific research,
- To become a reference center in the field of embryology within the in vitro fertilization unit, not only in our country but also in the world.
