Histology and Embryology

History:

Kocaeli University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology was founded in 1994 by Prof.Dr. Sureyya CEYLAN as a first teaching fellow. In this period, two post-graduate education programs were started with two TUS (examination for specialty in medicine) assistants and one assistant registered postgraduate program of the Institute of Health Sciences.

Histology and Embryology has started the education and training with 41 students in 1995-1996 at Department of Basic Medical Sciences in Derince. Since 2005, education, teaching and research activities have been going on the Faculty of Medicine in Kocaeli University Umuttepe Campus.

Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Assisted Reproductive Techniques Center was founded in 2008 and still continuing its activities and Prof.Dr. Serdar FILIZ, one of the lecturer in Histology and Embryology Department, is the director of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory in this center.

Founded in 2007, Kocaeli University Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Research and Application Center is the first stem cell center and Prof.Dr. Yusufhan YAZIR, one of the lecturer in Histology and Embryology Department, has been the director of this center and Head of Stem Cell Department of Health Sciences Institute since 2015.

For the purpose of making new and comprehensive education programs and carrying out scientific researches in Histology and Embryology Department, routine light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and student laboratories were established. Within the scope of the Cooperation of West BlackSea Universities, a joint doctoral program and a joint master's program have been carried out since 2012 and 2014, respectively with the Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University, Institue of Health Sciences, Department of Histology and Embryology. 2 TUS, 11 Master, 11 Ph.D. courses have been completed within the scope of postgraduate education programs in our department.

Within the scope of post-graduate education and training program, Histology and Embryology courses are given to the students who are in the graduate (master and doctorate) education program under the Health Sciences Institute. In 2021-2022 academic year, postgraduate education is given to 2 Ph.D. students depending on the Institute of Health Sciences.

Histology; is a science that examines and teaches the invisible thin structures of normal cells, tissues and organs at the microscopic level. Therefore, it has an important place in medical education and training. The fact that all physiological and pathological events in the body occur at the level of cell and tissue shows the importance of histology education and training. Histological preparation techniques, appropriate staining and microscopes are used to examine normal body structures. The structural and functional findings obtained are conveyed to the students by using various educational and teaching tools.

Embryology is a science that explores, examines and teaches the development and development of living things in prenatal period. All developmental events from fertilization to fertilization are within the subject of embryology. In humans, spermatozoa develop a complex multicellular organism from a single structure formed after fertilizing the oocyte; the basic characteristics of the person who has started to function with the development of tissues and organs; the underlying causes of abnormal development; pathologic cases such as the regeneration, proliferation, growth and formation of some tumors; clarify the immunological events and the origins of autonomic disorders associated with embryonic life. Therefore, the knowledge learned from the embryology science; It provides a better understanding of many subjects such as Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Genetics, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, scientific advances in the field of ”Supporting Reproduction Techniques de in order to solve the health problems related to fertility also cover the topics of embryology. In recent years, there has been a significant and rapid progress in the field of embryology. For all these reasons, it is of utmost importance that the developments in prenatal life and embryology are transferred to the students in detail.

Scientific research projects, which have been completed or have been going on in partnership with our department and with other departments, have been completed and scientific studies have been presented in national and international congresses and published in various journals.
