History

Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine was established in accordance with the Council of Higher Education Law numbered 2809 dated 03.07.1992, and with the additional 13th article of the law numbered 3837 dated 11.07.1992, published in the Official Gazette numbered 212181. The Faculty of Medicine, officially came into existence with this law, has been put into service in Social Security Institution (SSI) Kocaeli Hospital with 80 bed capacity, located in Derince Sopalı, in accordance to the protocol on the joint tenancy of SSI Kocaeli Hospital, signed between Kocaeli University Rectorate and SSI General Directorate, and to the handover agreement dated 16.02.1995. Starting with the attendance of 41 students in the 1995-1996 academic year, in accordance with the decision numbered 4 given by the University Senate in the conference numbered 95/1 dated 12.01.1995, and with the approval of the Higher Education Council (YÖK), our Faculty had its first graduates with 32 students in the 2001-2002 academic year. The founding dean of our Faculty is Prof.Dr. Baki Komsuoğlu. Prof. Dr. Kamil Toker was assigned to the dean of the Faculty between the dates 27.06.1997-28.06.2000, and so was Prof.Dr. Ali Gökalp between 29.06.2000-28.06.2006. Prof.Dr. Ali Demirci has been appointed the dean since 29.06.2006. Prof. Dr. Şükrü HATUN has started the work as dean of medical school at 9 August 2012.

After the service of the Medical Faculty Hospital was disrupted in consequence of getting destroyed in the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake, a prefabricated hospital with 240 bed capacity and 3 prefabricated classrooms were built; and so the education was devotedly prevented from getting interrupted. With the additional building came into service in June, 2002, our bed capacity reached 383. Since June 20, 2005, our Faculty has moved into the new buildings with 750 bed capacity, equipped with the advanced technology, located in Kocaeli University, Umuttepe Central Campus.

With the additional education building put into service in 2011-2012 academic year, our Faculty can meet the requirements of the increasing class size.
